Carnival Work & Gifts (Week of 5/11)

Hello everyone! This week in the Engineering Shop was spent working on a bit of everything. I've continued work on the NTHS Ring Toss, though we're changing directions a bit. I also worked on 3d printed Steam Engine that Mr.L asked me to make, started work on a gift for a teacher who wrote my other Letter of Recommendation, and started to fix another guitar for the music department. It's getting very close to the end of my Senior Year, so there's around maybe 2 blog posts left before graduation. That aside, We have a bunch of different things to discuss, so let's dive into the week!

Last Friday, Mr.L asked me to test out some drawings he did for the Freshman and wanted me to see if they needed any changes plus how easy they are to follow. I got a few some the parts done Friday, so coming in Monday I planned on finishing the rest of the parts. It's wasn't that hard, just took a bit of time as I had to input all of the measurements as parameters. Mr.L gave me a mock up of the engine already built so I could see how it all fitted together. He also wanted me to create each part in their own part file in Fusion and combine them all in a assembly file. The 3d print of all the parts took a good hour. When I was putting everything together, I noticed that we don't have any 10-32 screws, only 10-24s. The one that was one the mock up was from Mr.L's house, so he just said to use the one on the mock up for the one I was building. I made the crank wheel a bit to big so I had to fix it in CAD, but also the piston was having major trouble going down the cylinder. Even after sanding down the sides of the piston, the problem remained. I put the Steam Engine on the back-burner after that, as there were other projects that I needed to do.

Speaking of other projects, I've made great process on the Ring Toss. I've finished the model for the actually rings being tossed, which are in the shape of the shop logo. The most time consuming part of the modeling the rings was that the logo uses a ton of curves so I had to line up a bunch of splines. I've also finished the model for the booth, so I was able to cut out a test version of the booth out of cardboard. I'm surprised that I got the size right first try, that never happens! Some problems when I tried to print out the bottles, as they were way bigger than I thought. I didn't want to use all that filament on a one time thing, so I went up to Culinary after school and asked one of chefs if they had any bottles that I could use for the ring toss. They said they'll get something, so I'll likely get the bottles Friday or check in with them at least.

On Thursday, the music department once again had broken guitars that they needed us to fix. Me and a fellow shop-mate took on the project as it was likely going to be a one day thing. I needed to basically take apart everything as the wires were located underneath the main cover. The wires looked fine when I checked, everything was just dirty, which they said that may be the problem. When I was taking everything apart I found that the little things underneath the string on the cover(IDK what they're called), they had springs over the screws and that was very tricky to put back on. It will probability take me a while to put the whole guitar back together as those springs are very tricky. Mr.L helped me put in screws in a liquid that will removed all of the rust, I just need to wipe them down Friday. I also started on a gift for the teacher who wrote my other letter of rec. I plan on making a rotating desk organizer for them, but I haven't got much done on it other than sketching it out.
